Georgy Ostretsov became prominent during the Perestroika period, working
within the boundaries of modern art and avant-garde fashion. From 1988 till
1998 the artist lived in Paris and continued working with avant-garde fashion
in its extreme, and it was during this time he also developed an interest in
the graphic novel. Through the interaction of these two interests, emerged the
idea of the masks made of latex that he frequently uses in his performances
including the project A new government - an anti-utopian story about the state
in which governors never appears in public without these latex masks on their
faces.
